Being a football fan and sports hypnotherapist I’ve been looking forward to this game for a while, but with a young family couldn’t watch it live due to a combination of work and Disney movies.

Somehow, I’ve managed to stay clear of the result all day and am excited, but not surprised by what I’m seeing. We’re 17 minutes into the game and Arsenal are winning 1-0 and have had a shot cleared off the line and are completely thumping the run away Premiership winners Chelsea – At the time of typing Arsenal have just hit the post – twice…..

Anyway, before Arsenal hit the post, I was about to say about how it seems that Arsenal looks like the only side likely to win this and could be 2 or 3 goals up by now.

But hang on – Arsenal are playing against the undisputed, best team in the country, they have a terrible defensive record this season (by their standard) players are forced to play out of position due to injury or suspension, the fans baying for the manager’s blood. Surely Chelsea have to win? And yet Arsenal are by far and away the best side – so what’s the difference?

Mental Strength in Sport – is it all in the head?

Well, in my little world the answer is simple – this game will be won or lost in the heads of the players.

Chelsea undoubtedly have the better players so why is it that now (after 30 minutes) Chelsea have had their 1st shot on target, and are still 2nd best by far? (Arsenal just had another 2 really good chances go begging whilst writing)

Anyway, back to the blog… The Chelsea players won the league at a canter whilst Arsenal have underperformed all season, so who had the most to play for? Chelsea going for the double or Arsenal salvaging something from their season?

It’s now half time as I’m watching and although Chelsea have come back into it the only real team asking the questions are Arsenal.

The pundits are talking about Arsenal being brighter, sharper and more focused.

Sharp and Strong

Sharper and more focused? That’s a mental attribute, our mental abilities affect our physical abilities – the proof of that is easy to see. If ever you’ve felt sad or low – what are your energy levels like? Pretty poor I should imagine, and yet if you’re feeling positive and motivated, there’s a spring in your step, you feel energised and ready to take on the world.

The problem is that once you start a game mentally poor it’s difficult to change that mindset mid-game – half time is a good time to do that. The problem is that when you’ve been battered most of the half the attitude in the dressing room will be one of negativity rather than positivity.

Half time team talk?

Imagine the conversations in the two dressing rooms. Chelsea will be saying, come on we can do this we’re better than this – reinforcing the fact that they are underperforming, whilst Arsenal will be buzzing talking about keeping it going, keeping focused. As a sports hypnotherapist, it’s my job to make sure that players go out with the right attitude.

What is interesting though, in the vein of this blog, is that Arsenal are now completely on top with a few minutes of Chelsea going down to 10 men – the physical signs of being a man down won’t show for a while so it’s undoubtedly mental immediately following the red card.

Ooooh, ¼ hour to go Chelsea equalise out of nowhere – this could be interesting… How will this affect the mindsets of both teams – OMG   2-1 Arsenal…. Straight away – going to stop writing for now – too exciting

What a game!!

Against all odds, it could have been 5 or 6 in the end.

The big question is, did Arsenal win the cup or did Chelsea lose it? I’ve been teaching my students a technique known as Swish.  Swish is a way of dismissing negative attitudes or outlooks.  If I was in the Chelsea dressing room before the game I would have used this swish technique to help them get focused because in my opinion, the Chelsea players were already on holiday in their heads before a ball was kicked. Whilst their conscious mind was focused on the game, their collective subconscious was possibly thinking the job was a done deal.

Let me explain….

My partner was a BHS qualified horse riding instructor when we first met. She was and still is, a very good horsewoman. We used to go for walks in the countryside with her on the horse and me walking the dogs. One day we came round the corner and there was an orange supermarket carrier bag stuck in the hedge. We all saw it and heard it rustling about, we all knew it was perfectly safe – except for Axel, the horse. Axel took one look at this thing, heard it rustle in the breeze and just bolted, there was nothing she could do to stop Axel from bolting. When I caught up with them if I’d have told Carol there was no point in bolting she’d have probably hit me one because it’s the horse that needs to know, not the rider.

I often talk about the difference between the Horse and the Rider,  whilst the rider might know what they want to do if the horse has different ideas it’s usually the horse that wins the battle.  in this case, the rider was The Logical mind and the horse the unconscious mind.  as far as Chelsea were concerned it would appear that the rider knew what to do but the horse I thought the job was done and so didn’t allow the players to have the mental strength and motivation required to overcome their opponents.

The game was won and lost in the mind before the ball was even kicked.

Exeter City

A day later, one of my local team’s, Exeter City were playing at Wembley too. They had really worked hard after a terrible start to the season and with an injury time winner made it very dramatically through to the play-off finals.

Despite being favourites to win, they lost 2-1 to Blackpool with pundits and fans alike saying that they ‘didn’t turn up.’ Some people saying it was ‘a game too far’ in the season. Really? A game too far?  What a load of old tosh…. 90 minutes at the most famous stadium in the world – and it was a game too far? Really?

No! Again the game was lost before a ball was kicked, it’s as much a mental game as a physical one once you reach a certain level.

Lenny the Lion

I remember playing against a striker called Lenny – so called because he looked like Lenny the Lion. I used to play centre-half and he was a centre-forward – he should have had me beat all ends up!

He was 15 years younger than me, loads faster. He had quick feet, was skillful on the ground as well as good in the air. I didn’t stand a chance …… on paper.

In reality, though he never ‘turned up’ when playing against me. I got inside his head. Early in the first game, we played against each other he made a good turn, spun round me but shot wide. I think I said something along the lines of. “I would have had a shot from there matey” Another time he beat me in the air, so I asked him how he did it. Did you lean left or right 1st? Which foot do you put your weight on? He gave me a bit of an odd look before telling me where to get off but I’d got to him. After that, he started consciously thinking about what he was doing which made him half a second slower every time. I heard him telling his teammate that he couldn’t get past me, the fact is he beat himself by thinking too much (rider) rather than trusting instinct (horse).

He always misses

On the rare occasion he did get past me I’d shout out to the keeper. “Don’t worry, it’s only Lenny, he always misses!” Invariably he’d blast the ball well wide or over the top.  At one point he even asked the ref to get me to stop…..

That season Lenny became the top scorer in the league and went on to play at a reasonable level. The thing is that whenever we played one another I had him totally in my pocket. He refused to shake my hand after games and accused me of ‘playing dirty’.

As soon as he saw he was playing against me he would be full of doubt. His body language changed whenever we made eye contact. He’d remember I was his jinx, he knew he would fail – and guess what?

Whenever he played against ME, he did fail…

Work with the subconscious

When I work with players I work on an unconscious level,  I work with Their horses whilst also talking to the rider. Suppose I had been working with Lenny as a sports hypnotist. I’d have reminded him (or rather his horse), that he was amazing. That he was unstoppable. That he was awesome! I’d have said that some old ‘has been’ that turned like the QE2 would be demolished. Both his horse and rider would know he was the best.

How I became a hypnotherapist

Sometimes things change very subtly, those subtle changes can make a huge difference …..

What is a hypnotic gastric band ??

With healthy eating regimes failing drastically people are thinking about a hypnotic gastric band.

The question is what is a hypnotic gastric band and how does it work?

More than that does a hypnotic gastric band work?

I’ll try to answer those questions as best as possible.

The mind can be so incredibly powerful to the extent that it causes physical changes. To some that may sound like a bold statement but in reality it’s easy to prove.

healthy eatingLook at someone who is scared for example, their heart rate increases, their palms sweat, pupils will dilate, their mouth goes dry (there’s perfectly normal reasons for this explained elsewhere on this site).

However can we convince someone that they have a stomach the size of a golf ball? Let’s face it, that’s a pretty tall order – it might be easy to do for a while – but what happens when they eat something the size of a cricket ball? Have you ever been head over heels in love and believe everything the other person says – only to find out they’re lying? If you have been that unfortunate then you will know that you then begin to doubt everything they ever told you. Well the hypnotic gastric band can be a bit like that if you get the wrong person doing it.

I went to a training course in hypnotic gastric band -ing. To me it was a waste of a day and several hundred pounds – although I did get CPD points for it so something came out of it.

The theory that this particular school taught is that you treat the client – sorry patient in this instance – as if they were going into hospital for a gastric band fitting, so the first thing you do is take their money. The second thing is to then tell them to come back when they’ve lost weight so that the liver will shrink – yup, they come in for weight loss and you tell them to come back when they’ve lost weight!
You then explain about healthy eating, this bit is fine although in my experience if someone is coming to see a hypnotherapist for weight loss they probably know more about diet and nutrition than the therapist because they’ve tried all the conventional means already.
You then explain how the gastric band works and all the possible side effects – that too is fine. You show them how much food they would be able to fit into a stomach the size of a golf ball – which isn’t much – some people will be motivated by this but I should imagine most would be horrified.compulsive eating

Then in the final session we get to do some hypnosis, you imagine going to the hospital, seeing the consultant and going into the operating theatre. The trainer at one point turned up in a white lab coat with a stethoscope around their neck – it was all I could do not to laugh out loud. They then went on to say that they poked the client with a pen 4 times around their abdomen and told them they were having key-hole surgery…

Now I am good at what I do – not a boast, just a fact – and if I started doing that to people I would feel a fraud and if I felt I was a fraud then what would the client think?

I have been practicing hypnotic weight loss for 12 years now with huge success rates, I don’t need to spray TCP round the room and poke people with pencils. What’s more people are paying to be hypnotised so they get what they pay for – hypnosis! Not everyone can be hypnotised so why take somebody’s money only to find out at the very end that you can’t hypnotise them?

So why do I advertise hypnotic gastric band then?

Well it is popular and great marketing – that’s the honest truth. However, I offer a free initial consultation where I explain all the above in detail and then go onto explain what i do for hypnotic weight loss.Train to be a hypnotist

  • Teach mindfulness – all too often we eat mindlessly wolfing our food down without tasting it properly
  • Teach the basics of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) this teaches us to think about the way we think.
  • Teach people to tell the difference between hunger for food, a craving for food or a desire for food
  • Use a combination of encouragement and aversion therapy in hypnosis
  • Use parts therapy (a part of me wants to do one thing another part wants to do something else) to work out what it is that drives us to eat.
  • Use direct suggestion therapy (you feel more full and satisfied with smaller quantities of food)
  • Use stress management techniques if required
  • Teach self hypnosis.

The results over the last 12 years have been fantastic – not 100% but nothing really is.

How do you talk to yourself? Do you indulge in negative self talk?

Do you have negative self talk?

Did you know that the real skill of a stage hypnotist is to pick the right people to work with? Most people don’t respond as well as those that get picked to go on stage. However we tend to hypnotise ourselves most of the time without even realising it.  Quite often it’s with negative self talk, as people we can be very good at telling ourselves off and giving ourselves a hard time.  All that does is makes us feel bad and become even more aware of when we get things wrong.


If you had a Siamese twin that just kept on having a go at you every time you made a mistake how long would it take for you to tell it to just go away (or words to that effect)? When we tell ourselves off however we just accept it, but why? Why can’t we change what we say to ourselves? Well, because most of the time we don’t even realise we are doing it. Once we do realise what we are doing then we can change it around, and I can show you how – if you’ll let me. I call it Sat Nav for the Soul

Sat Nav for the Soul


Have you ever heard people say any of the following?

“I’m a really positive person but nothing ever works for me.”
“I always get in the wrong queue at supermarkets.”
“My life is rubbish (or words to that effect)”
“Why does this always happen to me?”

Some people talk about The Law of Attraction ie the more you believe something is going to happen the more you attract that from the ‘Universe’.

I’m a very pragmatic person and don’t necessarily buy into this whole stuff about our thoughts making cosmic powers attract positive or negative things towards us BUT……. That doesn’t mean the Law of Attraction doesn’t exist – far from it.

Have you ever been in a position where you are thinking about buying a new car or a new jacket for example? Perhaps you have already been to see similar either in person or online. If this is the case then the chances are you will suddenly begin to notice similar cars or jackets all over the place?
Does this mean that the world is suddenly full of new cars and jackets? No of course not but it does mean that you are much more aware of them.

Let’s take a look at some of the above statements:

“I’m a really positive person but nothing ever works for me.” I would quite happily reckon that this person posts up lots of positive quotes on facebook like live life to the full and the like but spends most of their time looking for things to go wrong. And therefore notices the things that go wrong – that way their “I’m really positive but…” statement becomes true – to them. The reality is that actually lots of good things might be happening but they’re too busy looking out for the bad that they don’t notice the good, or take the good for granted so therefore don’t acknowledge it or be grateful for it.

“I always get in the wrong queue at supermarkets.” – Really? How true is that statement then? Is that a fact or do you just ignore the times when you get to the quickest queue in the supermarket.

“My life is rubbish” Hmmmm, I bet that when this person is challenged about that statement they realise that it isn’t always that rubbish, it’s just that they focus on the negatives and ignore the positives.

“Why does this always happen to me?” It probably doesn’t, not 100% of the time….

So what can we do about it?

It’s easy really we begin to focus on what we do want. I can explain in greater detail during one of our one day seminars but effectively begin to list the things you DO want and when they arrive be grateful. It doesn’t need to be earth shatteringly amazing, it could be something like getting in the quickest queue at the supermarket. If it doesn’t happen then perhaps mentally shrug and wait for the next time. But when it does happen make a mental note of it, be grateful. You don’t have to send your gratitude out to the universe unless you really want to. Just be grateful and guess what … the more grateful you are the more you’ll notice the good things and shrug off the bad. Unless of course you have a mantra of “I’m always grateful but ……” in which case you’re still noticing the ‘but’ more than anything else ……

Does hypnotherapy work for weight loss really work?

It’s a common question, Does hypnotherapy work for weight loss ? I mean really work? Does hypnotherapy work for weight loss?

I had a client come in for his 3rd session yesterday, to preserve his anonymity let’s call him Big Al. Big Al joked that he was on a seafood diet – he would see food and eat it. Session 1 had gone well, we had discussed things from a cognitive approach and we had done a bit of weight loss hypnotherapy. Session 2 Big Al was very chipper, he had definitely eaten less and exercised more, unfortunately the scales said otherwise – he had gained a whole two ounces! TWO OUNCES I TELL YOU – TWO OUNCES

Had he been cheating? I doubt it. Were the scales wrong? I doubt that either, we check them against other scales every week. Big Al was not a happy bunny …………..

Yesterday Big Al came in a bit dejected, “Well I don’t know,” he said “Does hypnotherapy work for weight loss really work?”

So we went to the office and I asked him how his week had been. The conversation went a bit like this.

Big Al:    Nope! Nothing…..

Me:        OK, well that’s unusual, how about crisps? How many bags have you had this week?
Big Al:    Well I haven’t actually had any now you come to mention it.

Me:        Okay, well what about chocolate? How many bars of chocolate have you had?
Big Al:    Errrrr…. None actually

Me:        OK, well what about take away’s? How many of those have you had?
Big Al:    Well, like you said, they’re just so expensive and full of fat & grease that the wife and I decided to cook our own meals.

Me:        So there HAVE been changes then?
Big Al:    Well not really…..

Me:        (Not for public viewing)

At this point I asked Al to step on the scales, he had lost 5lbs since his 1st visit.
Big Al then pointed out that of course he had. He’d cut out the rubbish and ate healthily over the last couple of weeks. Big Al still didn’t think that hypnotherapy works for weight loss though.

You see some (most) people come to a hypnotherapy session with a preconceived idea at some level, often gleaned through stuff they have seen on TV or stage. They expect crash, bang, wallop and a parting of the seas, when you explain that things just happen slowly and naturally they don’t quite get it. It’s a bit like watching your children grow up, it happens so slowly that you don’t notice it until all of a sudden the Barbie posters come down and the boy band posters go up, then next thing you know it’s GCSE’s and nightclubs (not always in that order) .

With hypnotherapy for weight loss, the hypnotherapy is the catalyst for change, it’s a life style change bought about from within and very difficult to define.

By the way – Big Al phoned up this morning and booked a top up session – I think he thought about some of the things I said to him after his ‘not really’ statement.
